As I sit here reflecting on my decision not to dress up for Halloween this year, I can’t help but feel a tinge of shame washing over me. Halloween has always been a time for self-expression and embracing one’s creativity, but this year, I find myself opting out of the festivities. Perhaps it’s the weight of the world on my shoulders or the exhaustion from the ongoing battles we face as black individuals. Whatever the reason may be, it’s a decision that doesn’t sit well with me.
Ashamed to Say I’m Not Dressing Up This Year
Another costume that caught my attention is this incredible Rex costume from the movie “Napoleon Dynamite.” The attention to detail and dedication that went into creating this cosplay is truly awe-inspiring. It’s a reminder of the immense creativity and talent within the black community, a group often overlooked in mainstream media.
While I may not be participating in Halloween this year, I take solace in the fact that there are countless black individuals out there who continue to celebrate and embrace this holiday. Their creativity and passion shine through their costumes and bring joy to those around them.
But it’s important to acknowledge that the decision not to dress up is not a reflection of a lack of creativity or excitement within the black community. It’s a choice made by individuals who may be feeling overwhelmed, tired, or simply not in the right frame of mind to partake in the festivities. And that’s okay.
So, as Halloween approaches, I encourage everyone, regardless of their race or background, to celebrate the holiday in a way that feels true to them. Whether that means going all out with a show-stopping costume or opting for a low-key night in, the most important thing is to prioritize your mental health and well-being.
As for me, I’ll be taking this Halloween as an opportunity to rest, reflect, and recharge. And who knows, maybe next year I’ll be back in full force, donning a costume that puts all others to shame. But for now, I embrace my decision and remind myself that it’s okay to prioritize self-care over external expectations.
